Summary:

Seafood has a wonderful story to tell regarding its consumption and human health. Extensive scientific data identifies the importance of seafood in the fight against chronic disease, yet the information does not always reach consumers. We need to collectively remind governments and disseminate clear messages about recommendations for increased seafood consumption. Consumers are starting to clue in, but they need advice, suggestions and reinforcement. Perhaps from this we can make inroads into increased global consumption.

Nutritional issues, like the American diet, came under scrutiny in the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations' report, as seafood is especially lacking on   dinner plates. On average, U.S. dinners provide only about 7% animal protein versus 25% in Asian countries.

The whole seafood industry needs to step up promotional efforts, which includes supermarkets, importers and the food industry ensuring that they keep health at the top of the agenda. Consumers are starting to clue in, but they clearly need advice, suggestions and reinforcement.
