Extension Aquaculture Specialists Honored

Hayward, Wis.--Two University of Wisconsin-Extension specialists were recently honored by the Wisconsin Aquaculture Association at its annual conference in Hayward.
Jim Held and Sarah Kaatz both received Aquaculture Education awards for their contributions to the state's aquaculture industry. Held was recognized for his long service helping to educate the state's fish farmers about pond management and environmental sustainability. He has also helped develop protocols used to manage yellow perch. Kaatz was honored for making aquaculture-related information more accessible to fish farmers and for the numerous workshops she has conducted over the past two years. "I am extremely pleased that both Jim Held and Sarah Kaatz were recognized for their fine work as extension specialists", said Tom Blewett, interim state program director for the Community, Natural Resources and Economic Development area, who was on hand for the ceremony and delivered the opening remarks.
Congressman David Obey, who was instrumental in initiating funding support for the Aquaculture Extension program in Wisconsin, now in its third year, received the Friend of Aquaculture award.
Matt Rudig, Congressman Obey's northern office representative, accepted the award on the Congressman's behalf and noted that Congressman Obey is happy to work with the aquaculture industry to ensure growth and economic opportunities.
The Wisconsin Aquaculture Association is an industry-led and producer-centered organization that focuses on promoting, educating and advocating for economic viability and environmental sustainability of commercial aquaculture. Wisconsin farm-raised fish are environmentally friendly and raised according to industry best management practices.
