The 2008 Aquaculture Poster Contest was a success with 15 entries from across the state. The Wisconsin Aquaculture Association (WAA) in conjunction with the Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility (NADF) and the University of Wisconsin Extension (UW-EX) sponsored the first annual Aquaculture Poster Contest. The purpose of the poster contest is to promote creative thought regarding the benefits of growing fish in Wisconsin, how aquaculture uses natural resources in an environmentally sound manner, promotes rural communities and produces safe locally grown products. The theme of this years poster was Aquaculture is Agriculture to help depict that although the crops are grown in water instead of land, the activity is truly farming. The entries showed great imagination and understanding. We worked with the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to send out notices to over 350 agriculture programs in the state and the contest was open to all Wisconsin schools. The posters were judged Friday evening at the annual Wisconsin Aquaculture Conference held in Manitowoc March 14-15th. The students did a great job of showing imagination and artistic flair, making the judging difficult. Three winners were chosen based on originality, artistic appeal and understanding of Wisconsin Aquaculture. The winning posters will be on display at the Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility for the coming year. The three winners are: First Place- $100, Kiel High School, Introduction to Aquaculture Class, David Friend, Instructor; Second Place - $50, Plum City High School, Small Animal Class, Peggy Skogen, Instructor; Third Place - $25, Weyauwega- Fremont High School, Introduction to Science Class, Sandra Dykes Instructor. In addition all entries received an Honorable Mention and were sent a Fish of Wisconsin poster. On April 2, Cindy Johnson, Sec/Tres WAA, Sarah Kaatz and Ron Johnson visited WeyauwegaFremont and Kiel High Schools to present the winning checks and to talk to the classes about aquaculture. Sandra Dykes at WeyauwegaFremont had us talk to two of her agriculture classes. The students were very interested in Wisconsin aquaculture and were excited to show off all the posters that were done. We also made the check presentation at Kiel High School and talked to the aquaculture class about the importance of aquaculture. On April 10, Cindy and Ron Johnson visited Plum City High School and made the check presentation during Peggy Skogens small animal class. The students had written out questions to ask us and were interested in the fish species Wisconsin raises and about the health of fish. All the schools indicated that the poster contest gave them a chance to talk about Wisconsin aquaculture and presented the students with a learning experience about fish farming. We are making this an annual event the students are already looking forward to it.
